So this is a new personal project I'm working on. I've decided to vis. dev. the story of Moby Dick. It will include several character designs, some environments, some illustrations, etc....

This is the first of the characters I'm working on. AHAB. The whole story is really built around him so I wanted to get him to a point of completion that I'm happy with before I move on to the rest. I need him to be able, older/more experienced, Completely possessed by his obsession, and worn out.

I've started with these as a sort of rough body shape. I'll take him a bit further soon with wardrobe, expressions, and gesture, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the direction he's going.

Went to the Amarillo Zoo with my good friend Will Terrell and his wife last weekend for some good ol' fashion animal sketchin'! It was super fun and we plan to go back in a month or so with some deeper understanding of the animals we're looking at. Fun Fun Fun!

Saw this guy in Walmart the other night while out sketching with Will Terrell. I'm pretty happy with the "unfinished" look it has. I really struggled to tell myself to "STOP!" and not render the dog out of it and kill all the life.

Soooooo....I've been working on this guy for a bit too long now. I'm happy with the figure, but I keep changing my mind on the background colorization. Pretty much I was going at it blind and not gathering enough reference before I started painting. F.Y.I. ....bad idea. So now I'm ready to start painting but I figured I'd post the figure in the meantime.

I've been sketching at Walmart on thursdays with a good friend of mine, Will Terrell. They've got a great Mcdonalds location right in the front of their store with tables facing the cashiers. This came from a sketch i did last week. I imagine it to be an all-terrain animal. Something that can dive into the deep ocean like a sperm whale but boogie on land as well. Maybe it feasts on the fungus that grows under dead carcasses and debris on the ocean floor so it uses its tusks to move the item to get to the fungus. But it can't sleep in the water so it has to leave the ocean each night to sleep on land.

Freelance gig

I don't usually post my freelance stuff, but I did some cartoons for a good friend of mine recently, Alex Alexakis of Pixel Chefs and Xpress Fix iphone repair. I had to caricature him along with his 3 business associates. So here's some process work along with the final cartoon.

1. First I get the caricature of each person down and approved.

2. Then I sketch out a rough of the poses I want.

3. Then the line drawing

4. And a touch of color

5. A couple details and BAM! FINAL!

I of course took a few liberties here away from the creature from Lord of The Rings, but I didn't have reference in front of me nor did I really want it to be a direct copy from the character in the movie. I just had it on my mind and thought it would be a fun thing to draw.

lately I've been thinking a lot about what to start focusing on in my artwork. I've been all over the board for a long time, searching for what I really love to do. As I go through my sketchbooks and other little doodles it became pretty clear that I really enjoy drawing and painting animals, creatures, and other little characters. I really enjoy the aspect of creating something that doesn't exist anywhere in the world. Not necessarily a new species, but maybe even a new person, a new attitude or gesture. So I did this little doodle the other night of this weird rhino creature and just couldn't (or at least didn't want to) put it down. I still really love to draw other things too; like landscapes for instance, and will probably start to throw some of that in my drawings too.

These are some designs I painted at work a few months ago. M&M ended up going in a completely different direction after I worked them all up and didn't buy any of them, so I assume they're safe to post now. Just in case...All these images are the property of Stephen Joseph inc.
I had more fun working on these than any job I've done all year. They kind of told us to "go nuts" which made it very entertaining.
